Heart urchin

Echinocardium cordatum (Pennant, 1777)

AnimalsIrregular sea urchins
Taille : 5 à 7 cm, max de 9cm Couleur : gris, jaunâtre, beige ou encore blanc (couleur sable) Il a un test calcaire fin et vu de haut il a la forme d'un coeur. Il est surmonté de piquants courts (radioles) et fins ressemblant à des poils Activité nocturne. Le jour il creuse un terrier de 10 à 20cm sous le sable.

Possible confusions

Oursin coeur de Fenaux (Echinocardium fenauxi) : plus abondant difficile à différencier Oursin coeur de Méditerranée (Echinocardium mediterraneum) : aussi long que large, peu présent Plagiobrissus de Costa (Plagiobrissus costae) : piquants de 2 longueurs, rare en Méditerranée

Fonds sableux Zone : bord de mer jusqu'à 250m (plutôt observé entre 5m et 15m)
