Cette algue mesure de 5 à 25 cm Sa couleur est variable : beige, violet, verdâtre, parfois rose clair. Les axes sont peu nombreux, jusqu'à 10. Ils sont cylindriques, ramifiés de chaque côté. La longueur des rameaux est décroissante en partant de la base de l'axe.

Possible confusions

Peut être confondue avec l'halyménia allongée dont les ramifications ne sont pas de chaque côté de l'axe et avec certaines dictyotes.

Biotope / Habitat

Elle vit dans les endroits abrités jusqu'à 60 m de profondeur, Elle est fixée sur les fonds durs. Elle peut aussi vivre en épiphyte ou épibionte (gorgone rouge par ex).
