Janie à branches fines à l'aspect d'une touffe serrée, sorte de houppe arrondie comme un pompon rose à rose pâle. La hauteur n'excède pas 5 à 6 cm Les caractères morpho-anatomiques de Jania virgata sont difficile à mettre en évidence sous l'eau ou sur photo. Cependant Jania virgata est une algue calcifiée articulée, constituée d'une succession de segments cylindriques rigides calcifiés et de segments cylindriques souples. Ils sont ramifiés de façon dichotome ou trichotome. C'est-à-dire un partage en deux ou trois rameaux égaux et sans axe principal.

Possible confusions

Avec les autres Jania , ainsi que Asparagopsis armata dans son cycle de reproduction. Il faut donc vérifier la ramification trichotome pour l'identifier.

Biotope / Habitat

Proche de la surface à une vingtaine de mètres de profondeur, elle préfère les biotopes nécessitant un éclairage important, elle est photophile. Elle peut se développer sur d'autres algues ou des substrats rocheux.
