Le Barbeau commun est un poisson, au corps robuste, fusiforme en forme de cylindre légèrement oblongue, dos légèrement bombé . De couleur vert brun, proche de couleur de son milieu, gravière, sable, pierrier.
Taille courante : 20 à 60 centimètres pour 1500gr à 4kg
Poids maximal : 12 kg pour 1.20m
La partie antérieure de la nageoire dorsale est plus haute, la caudale est échancrée.
La tête est allongée, la bouche en position inférieure possède des lèvres et quatre barbillons.
