- La coloration du corps est variable (marbré, beige clair – sombre, à bandes claires – noir pour les mâles reproducteurs) ;
- Tête massive avec des lèvres épaisses ;
- Présence de rayons filamenteux libres sur le haut des nageoires pectorales ;
- Nuque couverte d'écaille ;
- Bande jaune ou orangée sur le haut de la première nageoire dorsale.
