Forme une croûte épaisse formée de petites boules d'aspect cartilagineux. Les oscules sont bien visibles au sommet de quelques-unes de ces bosses. La couleur, variable du beige au rouge vif est souvent plus soutenue au sommet (effet de la lumière sur des microalgues symbiotiques). Dépourvue de spicules et de fibre de spongine.

Possible confusions

Forme "chou-fleur" caractéristique.

Biotope / Habitat

Fonds rocheux de 5 à 300 m. Également en épibionte sur les ascidies.

Distribution

Manche Atlantique nord Assez commune localement en Bretagne.
