Possible confusions
On peut très bien le confondre avec le Madrépore dent de chien Caryophyllia smithii qui n'est pas dans le même biotope (substrats horizontaux) . Le calice n'est pas circulaire mais ovale avec des côtes rayonnantes

Taille : 15-20 mm de hauteur pour un diamètre de 10-12 mm ( Max = 65 mm pour 20mm de diamètre )
Couleur : rougeâtre, rose, verdâtre, brun
Aspect : calice circulaire, de forme ovale pour les plus gros, il a 5 cycles de 6 septes blancs bien visibles, côtes peu marquées, tentacules longues translucides suivies d'un bouton.
Pendant la journée le polype est rétracté.
