La transparence incolore est caractéristique de ce petit Alcyon qui ne dépasse guère les 10 cm. Absent des eaux peu profondes, les tissus ne contiennent pas de zooxanthelles (Algues unicellulaires symbiotiques), qui teintent de vert ou de brun les tissus de nombreux Cnidaires.
