Idotea balthica est un isopode au corps long et ovale recouvert d'une carapace, d'une taille variant de 10 à 35 mm. Son corps se compose de trois éléments, la tête, le thorax et l'abdomen. le Telson se termine par trois pointes, la plus longue étant au centre.
Sa couleur varie du jaune au brun vert ou rouge, avec parfois des taches blanches ou des lignes blanches.
