Sea orange

Tethya citrina Sarà & Melone, 1965

Eponge de forme ronde, de 2 à 10 cm de diamètre, de couleur jaune à orange pâle, présentant un gros oscule en position apicale. Les ostioles ne sont pas visibles. La surface est recouverte de verrues tuberculées.

Possible confusions

En Méditerranée, où elle est rare, avec l'espèce méditerranéenne Tethya aurantium qui présente une couleur orange plus soutenue et des verrues de forme plus régulièrement circulaire.

Biotope / Habitat

Substrats rocheux, du bas de l'estran au circalittoral.

Distribution

Très commune en Atlantique NE, Manche, Mer du Nord, rare en Méditerranée.

Species status description

La reproduction asexuée passe par des bourgeonnements à partir des verrues tuberculées de surface qui libèrent une petite éponge (gemmule) qui se fixe sur le substrat.
