Possible confusions
Le poisson papillon à selle du Pacifique (Chaetodon ulietensis) présente deux bandes noires plus longues, parfois estompées et séparées d'une zone blanche. Cette espèce se rencontre à l'est des Iles Cocos-Keeling.

Atteint 20 cm. Corps blanc avec deux bandes noires partant du dos et s'arrêtant au 1/3 supérieur ou à la moitié du flanc. Ces deux bandes sont séparées d'une zone jaune. Arrière du corps et nageoire caudale jaunes. Tache noire sur le pédoncule caudale.
