Black backed butterflyfish

Chaetodon melannotus Bloch & Schneider, 1801

Atteint 15 cm. Le corps est blanc avec des bandes noires dirigées vers le bas et l'avant. Une bande sombre sur l'oeil. Le corps est entouré de jaune. L'arrière de la nageoire caudale est blanc transparent.

Possible confusions

Le poisson papillon à point caudal (Chaetodon ocellicauda) a une ocelle noire sur le pédoncule caudale et ses nageoires ventrales sont blanches et pas jaunes. On le rencontre de la Malaisie à Palau. Le poisson papillon à points dorés (Chaetodon selene) présente des barres discontinues et de couleur jaune sur les flancs. Présent de l'Australie à la Nouvelle Guinée.

Biotope / Habitat

Jusqu'à 20 m de profondeur, sur les platiers, les lagons et les pentes externes. Solitaire ou en couple.

De la Mer Rouge aux îles Samoa.
