Taille : maximum 260 cm pour 120 kg Couleur : dos sombre parsemé de taches plus claires, ventre gris Corps : élancé, mince et fuselé Tête : melon nettement démarqué du rostre, rostre avec une pointe blanche chez les adultes, bec assez long Ailerons : grands en forme de faucille Nageoires : pectorales fines, de couleur foncée Vivent en clans, bons nageurs, leur nage en surface est bien visible

Possible confusions

Dauphin à long bec - Stenella longirostris : ailerons moins falciformes, le rostre plus long n'a pas l'extrémité blanche il existe 2 sous espèces le Stenella attenuata graffmani et le Stenella attenuata attenuata.

Biotope / Habitat

Bord de mer, côte et haute mer. Recherche des eaux au-delà de 22 °C

Océan Pacifique, Caraïbes, Océan Indien, eaux tropicales et tempérées du monde entier

Species status description

Espèce évaluée, réglementée, protégée. Elle est trop souvent victime des filets dérivants . PRÉCAUTION D'OBSERVATION - Les cétacés sont des animaux sensibles aux dérangements ; leur observation y compris sous-marine ne doit donc avoir lieu que si l'animal vient spontanément vers l'observateur, afin de ne pas risquer de troubler son comportement naturel. Leur perturbation intentionnelle est explicitement interdite par la loi française. -
