Taille : 5 à 15cm jusqu'à 20 cm
Couleur : blanc-argent, 5 bandes verticales noires, dos jaune (dos du mâle bleu en période de reproduction)
Aspect : corps comprimé latéralement, bouche petite, une nageoire dorsale évasée à l'arrière, nageoire anale symétrique à la partie large de la dorsale, queue fourchue.
