Le requin marteau commun Sphyrna zygaena : ne possède pas d'encoche médiale sur le museau.
Le grand requin marteau Sphyrna mokarran : est plus grand et possède une nageoire dorsale très développée.

Requin pouvant atteindre 4m20, mais habituellement entre 2 et 3m.
Caractérisé par sa tête aplatie avec les yeux situés sur les côtés.
Robe grisâtre ou brun olive avec le ventre blanc.
Extrémités des pectorales parfois noires.
Corps allongé et comprimé latéralement.
Première nageoire dorsale assez haute.
Requin assez timide, mais pouvant être agressif en présence d'un stimulus alimentaire.
Déplacement de ces requins souvent en bancs, pratiquant une ségrégation par l'âge et le sexe.
