Possible confusions
Seule murène aussi massive. Le corps de la murène a tache noire (Gymnothorax flavimarginatus est jaunâtre et l'oeil est orange.

La plus grosse murène du récif, pouvant atteindre 3 m de long. Corps brun tacheté de noir. L'ouïe est entourée de noir, souvent gris.
Les nageoires dorsale, caudale et anale n'en forment qu'une, alors que les nageoires pectorales et anales sont absentes.
Attention aux morsures dans les zones où le feeding est pratiqué. Murène la plus commune dans les récifs.
