Présente dans les substrats rocheux et coralliens et parfois dans l'herbier proche, elle est plus active la nuit.

Le corps est cylindrique très allongé, anguilliforme. La robe est fortement tachetée de brun sur un fond blanchâtre.
La tête est allongée et conique, le museau est fin. Les narines sont tubulaires. La mâchoire de cette prédatrice est armée de petites dents fines et acérées, la gueule est grandement fendue. Les murènes restent souvent la bouche ouverte.
L'oeil situé environ au milieu de la mâchoire supérieur est gros noir et cerclé de blanc.
Comme tous les poissons de cette famille les nageoires dorsale, caudale et anale sont fusionnées.
