Algue rouge sombre formant des touffes denses de 3 à 7 cm de haut sur les ascophylles Ascophyllum nodosum. La fronde cylindrique est régulièrement dichotomique, fixée à son support par un rhizoïde.

Possible confusions

Sa présence en épiphyte des fucales de l'estran limite le risque de confusion avec d'autres algues rouges.

Biotope / Habitat

Epiphyte des fucales en milieu rocheux intertidal : principalement l'ascophylle Ascophyllum nodosum, parfois les fucus Fucus vesiculatus ou Fucus serratus.

Distribution

Atlantique NE (du Portugal aux Iles Britanniques), Manche, Mer du Nord, Atlantique NW (NE des Etats-Unis, Canada, Islande)
