De quelques mètres et jusqu' à 200 m dans les fonds rocheux, récifs coralliens et les épaves. Sciaphile, il reste à proximité des cavités et des grottes où il peut être observer de nuit.

Homard de récif endémique des régions les plus chaudes de l'océan Atlantique:
- Taille de l'ordre de 15 cm,
- Couleurs vives, rouge-orangé des rayures, des anneaux ou des taches,
- Marques blanches dont un cercle en forme d'oeil de boeuf avec un point central sur le thorax,
- Extrémité des épines sur les pinces et thorax blanche,
- Poils sur tout le le corps et sur les pinces.
