Taille moyenne : 4 cm
Le corps est très effilé et comprimé latéralement. Les mâles possèdent un petit coussinet adipeux sur la tête. Absence de tentacules supra-orbitaires.
De coloration très variable, le corps est brun à verdâtre, marqué de 10 à 12 bandes transversales plus sombres formant des taches alternées claires et sombres. En période de reproduction, des couleurs vives peuvent apparaître chez les mâles.
