Grand ver tubicole vivant dans un long tube fin pouvant atteindre 30 cm de long. Le panache du ver est en forme de spire d'où son nom. Ses couleurs sont très variables du blanc aux rouges en passant par des bruns et des panachages de couleurs. Sensible aux vibrations et à la lumière il rentre rapidement dans son tube pour se mettre à l'abri.
