Squat-headed hammerhead shark

Requin pouvant atteindre 6 m de long, caractérisé par une tête large avec 2 expansions au bout desquelles se trouvent les yeux. Le bord antérieur de la tête est presque droit. La première nageoire dorsale est très haute et falciforme, la deuxième et les pelviennes sont longues et concaves. Robe gris-brun et ventre blanc. Peut attaquer les plongeurs dans certaines conditions (territorialité, stimulation électrique telle que le flash d'un appareil photo ou d'une caméra).

Possible confusions

Les autres espèces de requins marteau sont plus petites et n'ont pas une première nageoire dorsale aussi proéminente.

Biotope / Habitat

Pélagique, parfois côtier, en eaux tropicales, de la surface et 100 m de profondeur. souvent solitaire.

Distribution

Zones tropicales de la Mer Rouge, Méditerranée, l'Océan Indien, l'Océan Pacifique et l'Océan Atlantique, y compris les Antilles.
