Taille : hauteur maximum 35 mn Coquille : fine, spiralée ressemblant à celle d'un escargot, l'ouverture est carrée. Sans opercule Couleur : violacée sur la partie inférieure et grise sur la partie supérieure. La janthine se tient à l'envers suspendue à son radeau de bulles Corps : violacé Tête : bouche au bout d'une trompe de forme cylindrique. Deux tentacules fourchus Aspect : fabrique un important chapelet de bulle de mucus lui permettant de flotter en surface

Possible confusions

Des espèces assez semblables sont facilement confondues : Janthina umbilicata : la plus petite des coquilles, elle est allongée. Absente en Europe Janthina globosa : la coquille est striée, Janthina exigua : la coquille plus petite est pointue, La janthine pâle Janthina pallida : la coquille plus petite est blanchâtre avec des reflets violets.

Biotope / Habitat

En pleine mer à l'interface eau-air.
