Possible confusions
La sertularelle ramifiée Sertularella gayi lui ressemble beaucoup, en plus jaune. Il faut repérer les hydrothèques, qui sont alternées pour la sertularelle ramifiée et sub-alternées pour l'hydraire-sapin.

La colonie forme des touffes de plumes beiges assez rigides, d'une dizaine de cm, qui rappellent la forme d'un sapin. Les branches sont alternées, assez longues, espacées régulièrement. La couleur peut varier en présence de micro-algues ou de petits épibiontes encroûtants.
