Oiseau de forme arrondie, au plumage entièrement noir : - Taille maximale : 42 cm, - Plumage noir, - Bec blanc se prolongeant par une plaque frontale blanche, - Pattes verdâtres avec de grands doigts bleuâtres palmés.

Possible confusions

Gallinule poule-d'eau Gallinula chloropus : poule d'eau très discrète, front rouge et base du bec jaune, raies blanches sur les flancs.

Biotope / Habitat

Ce petit échassier, peu farouche, se rencontre aussi bien sur les plans d'eau et canaux urbains que sur les étangs, hors tourbière acide.
