False Carragheen Moss

Mastocarpus stellatus (Stackh.) Guiry, 1984

PlantsErect thalli
Algue arbustive à fronde aplatie de 8 mm d'épaisseur et de 5 à 17 cm de longueur, plus ou moins régulièrement dichotomique, de consistance cartilagineuse et de couleur allant du brun-rouge au violet ou au noir. Le bord de la fronde est recourbé donnant un aspect en gouttière. La fronde est fixée au substrat par un crampon discoïde qui peut mesurer jusqu'à 5 cm. A maturité, le gamétophyte femelle porte des papilles reproductives en forme de grains de raisin réparties sur toute la surface de la fronde. Le sporophyte, identifié initialement comme l'espèce Petrocelis cruenta, forme une plaque encroutante sombre violacée à noire de quelques dizaines de cm de diamètre.

Possible confusions

Avec le Goémon frisé Chondrus crispus qui partage le même habitat, mais dont la fronde plus fine et de consistance plus lisse et glissante n'est habituellement pas recourbée en gouttière. Les structures reproductives du goémon frisé sont localisées à l'apex de la fronde et présentent une forme ovale.

Biotope / Habitat

Commune sur les substrats rocheux, du milieu au bas de l'estran.

Atlantique Nord-Est, du Portugal aux Iles Britanniques, Manche, Mer du Nord, Islande, Atlantique Nord-Ouest, du Rhode Island à la Nouvelle Écosse.
