Couleur : plutôt sombre, vert à bleu sur le dos, ventre et flancs blancs ou argentés
Aspect : corps fin, cylindrique et allongé, grandes nageoires pectorales et pelviennes, tête courte et carrée, museau large, bouche petite avec des petites dents; ligne latérale basse, nageoire anale plus courte que la nageoire dorsale, nageoire dorsale très longue en forme de fouet, yeux plats et larges (pour voir à la surface)
