Hornweed, red hornweed

Ceramium virgatum Roth, 1797

PlantsErect thalli

Touffe de filaments de couleur rouge vif à rouge bordeaux n'excédant pas 30 cm de haut, qui est fixée au substrat par un ensemble dense de filaments (qui persiste en hiver). Ces filaments se divisent par 2 de façon irrégulière, se rétrécissent vers les extrémités en forme de petites cornes.

Possible confusions

Peut être confondue avec d'autres espèces du genre Ceramium qui ont une morphologie similaire, Une observation microscopique est indispensable.

Biotope / Habitat

Jusqu'à 30 m sur les rochers. Elle peut se fixer sur d'autres algues par exemple le codium fragile ou sur des plantes comme la zostère marine.

Distribution

Atlantique nord est, Manche, mer du Nord, Méditerranée. Serait cosmopolite.
