Taille maximale : 18 cm.
Possède une longue queue noire bordée à l'extérieur de blanc et qui est fréquemment agitée de mouvements verticaux.
Plumage noir et blanc.
Adulte : tête noire et blanche (front blanc, arrière de la calotte noir, gorge noire), bavette noire, bec noir, pattes noires.
Juvénile : plumage moins contrasté.
