Robe brun foncé ou noire. Présence d'une tache rouge en forme de goutte dessinée horizontalement située à proximité de la nageoire caudale. Une paire d'épines rétractables à l'aspect de scalpel. Taille maximale 25 cm. Aucun dimorphisme sexuel.

Poisson diurne présent sur la pente récifale externe de 0 m à 10 m, souvent en groupe. Espèce territoriale

Océan Pacifique tropical de la Micronésie aux îles d'Hawaï.
