Il fréquente aussi les eaux salées et saumâtres des côtes.

Mâle :
- Tête noire avec des reflets verts.
- Présence d'une tache blanche entre le bec et l'oeil.
- Oeil jaune.
- Dos et arrière noir, reste du corps blanc.
Femelle :
- Tête marron avec un collier blanc.
- Plumage gris-brun.
