Il chasse au lever et au coucher du soleil, survolant les côtes pour attraper des poissons.

Oiseau au plumage blanc de 30 cm avec une envergure allant jusqu'à 80 cm.
Bec à la base bleutée puis devenant totalement noir.
Bec long, fort et pointu.
Grands yeux noirs.
Queue fourchue et pattes, bleu-acier, palmées.
Pas de dimorphisme sexuel.
Les jeunes sont aussi blancs avec des marques grises sur le dos.
