Somniosus microcephalus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)

Corps massif atteignant 6,40 m. Nageoires dorsales peu développées. Oeil rond et vert, souvent parasité. Coloration du gris au brun, avec parfois des points clairs.

Possible confusions

Il existe d'autres espèces dans le Pacifique (Somniosus pacificus), en Antarctique (Somniosus antarcticus) et une espèce plus petite dans l'Atlantique et en Méditerranée (Somniosus rostratus) qui atteint 1,50 m et est uniformément noire.

Biotope / Habitat

Au large, sur le plateau continental et le sommet du talus océanique, au moins jusqu'à 180 m de profondeur. Se rapproche des côtes en hiver.

Atlantique nord et Océan Arctique.
