Algue cartilagineuse filiforme ayant un aspect rampant de 10 à 20 cm. Couleur rouge pourpre ou noirâtre. Nombreuses et irrégulières ramifications cylindriques arquées (1 à 2 mm de diamètre). Les extrémités sont courbes et pointues et se fixent au contact avec n'importe quel substrat. Base (crampon) initiale discoïde devenant stolonifère.
