Possible confusions
Les différentes espèces du genre Porphyra présentes dans la zone (P. dioica, P. linearis, P. purpurea, P. umbilicalis) sont difficiles à distinguer entre elles sans observation microscopique.

Lames minces et très souples, de formes linéaires à ovales, souvent d'aspect plissé, de 5 à 20 cm de long, de couleur allant du pourpre au vert olive en passant par le rouge ou le brun, soyeuses au toucher. La lame est fixée au substrat par un petit disque et un stipe très court.
