Le goéland pontique Larus cachinnans est un grand goéland reconnaissable à son dos gris clair, ses longues pattes roses, son bec jaune marqué d'une tache rouge, et ses yeux pâles cerclés de rouge.
Il fréquente les zones côtières et les grands plans d'eau intérieurs et son expansion vers l'ouest le rend de plus en plus visible en Europe occidentale, bien qu'il soit souvent difficile à distinguer des autres goélands proches comme le goéland leucophée.
