Ascidie solitaire noire comme son nom l'indique, parfois sa base est plus claire si elle est vraiment à l'ombre. Surface boursouflée, très épaisse à sa base et se terminant par un tube qui s'ouvre sur le siphon buccal. Le siphon cloacal est rarement visible.
