Ciona intestinalis (Linnaeus, 1767)

AnimalsSimple and social ascidians
Grande ascidie solitaire de forme allongée mesurant jusqu'à 20 cm de long. Les 2 siphons très rapprochés et situés à l'extrémité supérieure sont lobés, souvent ourlés de jaune avec un point rouge entre les lobes. La tunique blanc pâle présente un aspect lisse et translucide qui permet de voir le tube digestif.

Possible confusions

Cione robuste Ciona robusta : présence de tubercules sur la tunique autour des siphons, pas de liseré jaune. En Méditerranée, la cione jaune Ciona edwards présente une tunique de couleur jaune uniforme.

Biotope / Habitat

Milieux rocheux, structures artificielles (quais, pontons, cordages), macroalgues, du bas de l'estran jusqu'à 200 m de profondeur. Elle peut former des colonies très denses en milieu portuaire et supporte les milieux dessalés et/ou pollués.

Distribution

Atlantique NE et NO, Méditerranée, Manche, Mer du Nord, Mer Noire. Semble cosmopolite en milieux portuaires.
