Plante annuelle semi-aquatique reconnaissable à ses épis ovoïdes à l'extrémité des tiges :
- Tiges en touffe, de 5 à 40 cm de hauteur et sillonnées,
- Epillets regroupés à l'extrémité de la tige, en épi ovale de 4 à 8 mm et de couleur roussâtre à brun-jaunâtre.
Floraison de Juin à Aout.
