Ascidie coloniale dont les individus (zoïdes) sont disposés en étoile autour du pore exhalant commun. La coloration est très variable. Les colonies sont généralement bicolores avec un contraste marqué entre les zoïdes et la tunique qui enveloppe la colonie, donnant un aspect en étoile très caractéristique. La forme générale de la colonie est plate, revêtante sur son substrat, parfois lobée. La taille globale de la colonie atteint quelques cm.
