Son corps est fusiforme, cylindrique et trapu. La nageoire caudale porte des pinnules au niveau dorsal et anal , le nombre est variable entre 7 à 10. Le corps est argenté plus clair sur le ventre et plus sombre sur le dos, les flancs sont bleutés .il peut atteindre la taille de 3 à 4 mètres pour un poids de 300 à 500 kilos. C'est le plus grand de tous les thons.

Biotope / Habitat

Il vit en bancs en pleine eau et a des périodes d'activité diurnes et nocturnes.

Distribution

Eaux subtropicales et tempérées de l'Atlantique, Méditerranée.
