Gray gorgonian

Paramuricea grayi (Johnson, 1861)

Octocoralliaire de couleur rose, violette ou jaune : - Gorgone présentant des branches irrégulières tendant à croitre sur un même plan - Branches fines et flexibles d'un diamètre de l'ordre de 3 à 4 mm, plus épaisses à la base et plus arrondies à l'extrémité, - Taille de 35 à 50 cm.

Possible confusions

En Méditerranée, confusion possible avec la gorgone pourpre, Paramuricea clavata : branches plus épaisses, diamètre moyen de l'ordre de 6 mm.

Biotope / Habitat

Espèce fixée sur un substrat solide et habitant les fonds littoraux profonds (circalittoraux) entre 20 et 200 mètres de profondeur.

Distribution

Présente en Atlantique Nord-Est du sud du golfe de Gascogne au golfe de Guinée (y compris les iles de Macaronésie (Acores, Madère, Canaries et Cap-Vert) ainsi qu'en Méditerranée.
