Algue rouge arbustive pouvant atteindre 60 cm de hauteur dont la fronde est composée de rameaux longs et fins de section ronde branchés densément de façon alterne. Les rameaux sont amincis à leur base et à leur extrémité. L'algue est fixée au substrat par un crampon griffu. La couleur varie du pourpre au brun-rouge, la consistance est élastique.
