Le gobie à bouche rouge a une taille d environ 13 à 18 cm.
Il est la plus grande espèce de gobie.
Il possède un corps rectangulaire, couleur marron clair et quelques marbrures marron-foncé. Il a les lèvres rouges, ses nageoires dorsales sont arrondies et sa nageoire pectorale possède des rayons filamenteux. On remarque des écailles sur sa nuque, ses joues et ses opercules.
La couleur rouge ne s'observera bien qu'en éclairant (disparition vers 5m)
