Taille : 1,5m jusqu'à 5m Couleur : vert-brun à blanc-noir, plus clair (jaune ou blanchâtre) sur le ventre L'albinisme chez le Silure glabre est assez fréquent (Silure "mandarin") Aspect : corps allongé, tête massive, large et aplatie, petits yeux, bouche très large, 2 barbillons sur la mâchoire supérieure, 4 barbillons sur la mâchoire inférieure, mâchoire inférieure plus longue (forme de sourire), nageoires pectorales courtes, petite nageoire dorsale, longue nageoire anale, nageoire caudale arrondie et en éventail Activité nocturne

Possible confusions

Poisson-chat (Ameiurus melas) qui est plus petit et a 8 barbillons (4 de chaque côté de la bouche)

Cours d'eau aux courants modérés, lacs et canaux artificiels Près du fond, sous les troncs et branches d'arbres tombés à l'eau ou près des berges Zone de profondeur : plutôt dans les 6-8m mais aussi jusqu'à 20m
