Possible confusions
Ressemblance avec le moustique et s'en distingue par :
- l'absence de pièces buccales allongées (organe piqueur chez la femelle du moustiques),
- la présence d'antennes en forme d'épais ou large plumeau chez le mâle.

Larves :
- mesurent de 1,5 à 3 mm de long, allongées et cylindriques,
- tête, thorax et abdomen bien différenciés,
- possèdent une paire de fausses-pattes ventrales sur le prothorax et le dernier segment abdominal,
- souvent de couleur rouge.
Adulte :
- petites mouches, de 1 à 13 mm, avec de longues pattes,
- tête, thorax et abdomen bien différenciés et 6 pattes,
- paire d'ailes longues et étroites,
- Mâles avec des antennes plumeuses ébouriffées.
