Plante herbacée, amphibie ou terrestre, non grimpante qui se présente sous deux formes selon qu'elle se trouve dans l'eau ou au sec.
Forme terrestre:
- Tige dressée ou un peu couchée à la base, ne dépassant pas 60 cm,.
- Feuilles courtement pétiolées, à limbe étroitement lancéolé, à faces (surtout la supérieure) couvertes de courts poils raides lui conférant un toucher râpeux.
Forme aquatique:
- Tige jusqu'à 3 m de long flottant horizontalement,
- Feuilles flottantes oblongues, arrondies ou tronquées à la base, avec un long pétiole,
- Feuilles longuement pétiolées, à limbe elliptique à ovale, glabre sur les faces mais à bords généralement garnis de courts poils raides,
Floraison de Juin à Septembre :
- Petites fleurs roses foncés, en épi terminal oblong-cylindrique, compact et dressé
- Epis souvent solitaire.
