Dustbin-lid jellyfish

Rhizostoma pulmo (Macri, 1778)

Taille : maximum de l'ombrelle 70 cm de diamètre pour une longueur dépassant le mètre Couleur : blanche le plus souvent avec des reflets teintés de bleu violacé (parfois orangés chez Rhizostoma octopus considérée encore comme une variété ) Corps : massif, gélatineux, concave en forme de cloche. Ombrelle : bordée d'un liseré bleuté, absence de tentacules Bras buccaux : prennent naissance au niveau du manubrium, ils sont au nombre de quatre, puis ils se divisent en deux pour donner 8 lobes à l'aspect de chou-fleur; les lobes abritent souvent des algues zooxanthelles. Méduse peu urticante

Possible confusions

Rhizostoma luteum . Que l'on rencontre plus rarement et plus au sud . Les tentacules sont longs et de couleur brun foncé presque noir violacé.

Biotope / Habitat

En pleine eau souvent peu profonde, proche des côtes et des estuaires. Fait partie du Necton (Contrairement au plancton est capable de nager et se déplacer contre de petits courants)
