Espèces ciliées de couleur grisâtre, individuellement non visible à l'oeil nu. Seule la forme coloniale est visible, surtout les grandes colonies. Leur taille varie généralement entre 50 et 500 micromètres. En forme de cloche.
Elles sont fixées sur des animaux, des plantes ou le substrat par de longs pédoncules, parfois rétractables en spirale. Ils peuvent aussi parfois se détacher et nager.
