Petit poisson, taille de 5 à 10 cm maximum 12 cm, 14 cm dans certaines littératures.
Corps : fusiforme, cylindriforme. Nageoires arrondies, caudale bien échancrée, petites écailles, présence de rayures transversales.
Dos gris vert. bouche horizontale.
Le mâle est plus coloré en période de reproduction.
